Plants you can grow in darkness

Often people think that plants need sunlight to survive, that they require light, water and carbon dioxide to grow. However, there are some plants you can grow in darkness.

Keeping indoor houseplants not only adds life to your spaces but also makes you feel fresher, calmer and lighter. From improving air quality to brightening every little corner, indoor plants do the trick with its tons of benefits.

Even if you are not a plant mother or if you think you don’t have time to care and tend the plants, no worries, here are some plants that thrive in low light areas that require less attention once you plant them.

  • Pothos / Devil’s ivy: Pothos is one of the top houseplants for improving indoor air quality and making your space cleaner. Living up to its name, Devil’s ivy, it is impossible to die and stays green even when kept in the dark. Though adaptable, Pothos also requires indirect light and allows the soil to dry out before watering every 1-2 weeks. They are a great addition to your bathroom, office or any room.

 

  • Sansevieria/Snake plant: Also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, snake plant versatility is tough to beat as it helps to filter indoor air and remove toxins. This plant can be neglected for weeks, yet these architectural shape leaves can still look fresh. So, you can go on your wor-kation or vacation with ease.

 

  • Zamiocalcus zamiifolia/Zee Zee plant: Zee zee plants are your best friend and is best for offices and homes. These dark green leaves are like a docile kid that does not complain even when neglected and accepts a low-light environment. ZZ plants absorb indoor air pollutants such as carbon dioxide, xylene serving its purpose.

 

  • Palm Chamaedorea Elegans: If you love greens but have no idea how to care one, Chamaedorea with attractive light green fronds will do the trick. An elegant but easy to look after is undemanding in terms of water, light, temperature and humidity with excellent air purifying qualities. Keep in mind that they won’t survive in complete darkness, so make sure to give a considerable amount of light at times.

 

  • Aglaonema/Chinese evergreen: Chinese evergreen is a plant perfect for beginners because it’s easy to grow. They tolerate low lighting conditions. This exotic looking foliage comes in an array of colours and variegated patterns; considered good luck by the Asian native in China. They’re perfect for almost any room in your home since they don’t like full sun and you won’t have to worry about repotting as it is a slow-growing plant.

 

  • Aspidistra elatior/ Cast Iron Plant: Like the name, the Cast-Iron Plant requires low maintenance and can handle deep shade without losing its green. You just need to water the soil only when it’s dried out and be kept away from direct sunlight to avoid the leaves from bleaching. This hard-to-kill houseplant will survive when all else doesn’t work out. It can be grown both outdoors and indoors.
  • Spathiphyllum/Peace lily: As studied by NASA, the peace lily is an amazing air cleaner and helps you to sleep better. They’ve earned their reputation for bringing calmness and alleviating the feelings of stress in the mind and body. The dark glossy green leaves are best for offices and homes to liven up your desk or any corner of the room. Adding to this beauty is the white flower that blooms in the spring. This beginner-friendly plant will even let you know it’s thirsty by dropping its leaves. All you can do the least is water and care for at times.
